Why this matters to you

Even if you have been a project manager for many years we are willing to bet that you have project management issues that are new to you. We're talking about the sort of situation where your experience does not point you towards the best course of action, problems that you feel ill equipped to tackle. These issues are particularly difficult if you are an experienced project manager and you feel you are expected to know the answer. You don't have to do it on your own. There is a lot of expertise out there that you can call on.

Somewhere in the world you can bet that there is another project manager who has already experienced and found a solution to a problem similar to yours. If you could easily and safely talk to such managers you could discuss difficult problems and help each other by sharing your wisdom. The problem is finding the right person to talk to and having a secure environment in which to discuss the problem, ask questions and share ideas.

We've noticed that managers don't get much opportunity to learn from each other, so we have created a forum for peer learning opportunities.

How to participate

Write down a real-life scenario calling for managerial skills and or talents that you don't feel you have (in other words, tell the story of something you have trouble handling well as a manager).

Similarly, write down a real-life scenario (a difficult management problem) that you do feel you can handle well.

For example, do you have any situations where you would like to give or receive other manager's insights and experience on subjects like:

  • Knowing how and how much to follow your process
  • Making yourself heard by stakeholders
  • Sizing people up with just an interview or a short meeting
  • Dealing with people who want to burden their boss with everything.
  • Dealing with a culture of fear
  • Identifying the most appropriate measurements
  • Dealing with unplanned staff changes
  • Finding the ground from which to make tradeoffs
  • No time for management getting too busy yourself

Email your scenario to either Suzanne Robertson or Susannah Finzi.

If you prefer to remain anonymous then there are several alternatives. If you wish to let us know who you are but nobody else, mark your submission clearly "I wish to be posted anonymously" (or something similar) and we will ensure that your name and email address do not appear on our site.

Alternatively, if you wish to be completely anonymous, even from us, then use the remailer at Replay.com. You can use the remailer by sending mail to remailer@replay.com. Place two colons on the first line of your message, followed by "Anon-To: email address". Follow that with a blank line, and then begin your message. For example:

From: joe@site.com
To: remailer@replay.com
Subject: Anonymous Mail

::
Anon-To: suzanne@systemsguild.com

Here is my project managament story....

The above will be delivered to Suzanne Robertson anonymously. All headers in the original message are removed. She will not know that it came from you, but keep in mind that she will not be able to reply to the message.

What we will do

We will load all of your scenarios onto the Project Magament Scenarios page here at the Atlantic Systems Guild web site so that they are accessible to all project managers. When you pose a question or discussion point, log in to the web site after a few days to see the responses.

Project managers who wish to discuss your scenarios, to work through them and to contribute their advice, observations and questions can send their responses via email to Suzanne Robertson or Susannah Finzi. Remember, if you prefer to remain anonymous then submit your scenario as anonymous email via the remailer@replay.com.

We will post the responses on our web page within one week.
